If you're not a fan of tofu, then this is the recipe for you! It's flavourful, needs only 8 ingredients, is super simple and takes about 30 minutes to make. There's also very little prep work involved!
My favourite way to prep the tofu and ensure the maximum amount of flavour is absorbed: FREEZE YOUR TOFU.
I usually buy the organic extra-firm 3-pack from Costco and freeze the tofu as soon as I bring it home. When I'm ready to use it, I let it thaw and then press the tofu.
I squeeze the tofu with my hands, but you can also lay some paper towel down on a baking tray and then weigh down the tofu with a cast iron pan. This method is a little more time consuming but is as effective at removing the excess water.
This method of freezing, thawing and then pressing the tofu, I found, releases so much more excess water! The tofu essentially becomes a sponge to soak up all the flavour.
INGREDIENTS:
Marinade:
- 1 block (350 g) of extra firm tofu, pressed and cubed into 1-inch cubes
- 1 tsp of a neutral oil (I used avocado oil)
- 2 tsp low-sodium soy sauce
- 2 tsp sriracha
Sauce:
-2 cloves of garlic, minced
-2 tbsp low-sodium soy sauce
-2 tbsp sriracha
-1 tbsp honey
-1 tbsp neutral oil (I used avocado oil)
-1 tsp toasted sesame oil
Method:
In a bowl, combine your pressed and cubed tofu, the neutral oil, soy sauce and sriracha. Mix well and let it sit and marinate for 15-30 minutes.
Airfry your marinated tofu at 350F for 13-15 minutes. When it's done, your tofu should be crispy on the outside and slightly chewy on the inside.
When the tofu is 2 minutes from being done, combine all of the "sauce" ingredients in a pan over medium-low heat.
Once the tofu is done, add the tofu to the pan, increase the heat to medium, and continue cooking until the sauce has reduced and is sticking to the tofu, like a glaze. This should take about 3-5 minutes. Don't reduce it too much, as you'll end up with dry tofu.
And that's it- you're done! Serve immediately!
My favourite way to serve the tofu is over some plain white rice, with some steamed veggies on the side- broccoli or boy choy are my go-to's!
